Description of Responsibilities: The Development Officer is appropriate for someone newer in their career or switching careers. This position is responsible for managing relationships with assigned donors and prospects to maximize philanthropic support for the Hillside Family of Agencies through the Hillside Children's Foundation. Reporting to the Sr. Director for Development, the Development Officer will serve as a member of the major gifts team charged with raising approximately $2.5M in major gifts as well as supporting the Foundation in meeting its goal of raising $3M+ in FY20. Hillside Family of Agencies has locations throughout Central New York and the greater Washington, DC, area; the successful candidate will work out of the Rochester, NY, location.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contribute to building and executing a comprehensive major gifts effort:

  • Under the direction of the Sr. Director of Major Gifts, contribute to the design, planning, and implementation of a comprehensive major gifts strategy to generate $2.5M annually, strengthen the donor base, and increase the prospect pool.
  • Participate in developing strategies for major gifts solicitations, including: tactics for building ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommendations for specific purposes and levels of gift; and identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation.
  • Work closely with the Manager of Annual Giving to identify new major gifts prospects.
  • Track and report progress using specific metrics.
  • Contribute to overall Foundation efforts to raise $3M annually.

Manage a major gifts portfolio:

  • Build and manage a portfolio of 150-200 qualified individual prospects and donors. Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward and retain qualified prospects and donors capable of making gifts of $1,000-$25,000 in support of Hillside's mission.
  • Utilize systems and software to create, implement and track moves management plans. HCF uses Blackbauds Raisers Edge, communications and wealth screening tools.
  • Regularly communicate with, visit and solicit identified donors and prospects.
  • Persuasively articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support for HFA priorities and programs.

Collaborate with colleagues: 

  • Cooperate and collaborate with Advancement and Major Gifts colleagues on Foundation/Advancement/HFA priorities, programs and initiatives.
  • Work closely with Annual Giving staff to identify new major gifts prospects and coordinate solicitations.
  • Interact on regular basis with department and program leaders to maintain an up-to-date understanding of program priorities and outcomes. Keep current on HFA programs and data in order to effectively share with funders.
  • Collaborate within and beyond the Foundation in building relationships to generate support for the Hillside's mission.
  • In concert with CAO, Foundation staff, and colleagues in Communications and Marketing, participate in developing prospect management guidelines, strategies and tactic.
  • Assist with the strategy for and creation of written communications from HFA leadership and volunteers appropriate to a donor's interests.

Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience/Personal Qualifications: 3 years experience in direct solicitation, sales, customer service or similar client facing relationships.
